State of Student (SOS)
Northwood PTSA is proud to partner with the ASB to produce this year's State of the Student!
We are excited to announce our annual "State of the Student" event, a day dedicated to self-reflection, community building, and personal growth. This year's theme is "Believe", focusing on fostering self-esteem, resilience, and a positive outlook for all students.
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, 2026, which will be a minimum day for all students.
In alignment with our "Believe" theme, we are introducing an inspiring challenge for our students: to go the entire minimum school day without their phones. This proposal reflects our belief in students’ ability to grow, self-regulate, and engage academically and socially.
The Benefits of Disconnecting
In today's hyper-connected world, we are constantly stimulated by digital devices, which can sometimes impact our mental clarity, focus, and social interactions. By participating in this phone-free challenge, students can experience several potential benefits supported by research:
-
Improved Focus and Attention: A break from constant notifications and the urge to check social media can significantly enhance attention spans and help students be more present in their classes and activities. This can lead to better engagement and improved academic performance.
-
Enhanced Social Connections: Without the distraction of screens, students are more likely to engage in meaningful, face-to-face interactions with their peers and teachers, thereby strengthening relationships and developing effective communication skills.
-
Reduced Stress and Anxiety: Excessive social media use and exposure to online pressures can contribute to feelings of anxiety, social comparison, and depression. A temporary digital detox can help lower stress levels and promote emotional well-being.
-
Increased Self-Awareness and Creativity: Unplugging offers opportunities for mindfulness, self-reflection, and creative thinking that can be hindered by constant digital input.
-
Better Sleep Habits (in line with our Challenge Success initiative): Practicing mindful technology use, even for a day, can help students recognize the importance of disconnecting from screens, especially before bedtime, which leads to improved sleep quality and overall health.
We understand that a full day without a phone can be a significant challenge for some students, which is why parent support is vital for the success of this initiative. We encourage you to discuss this challenge with your student and support them in making a choice that aligns with their personal growth and development. The goal is to empower them to take control of their digital habits and experience the benefits of being fully present.
Students will be provided with alternative ways to manage their day, while keeping their phones securely stored with their advisement teacher (e.g., secured in teachers' cabinets) until the final period of the day. As an alternative, if you are willing to consider having your student leave their phone at home in the morning, we would appreciate the additional support in this endeavor. For emergency purposes, the front office and school staff will be fully operational and accessible at (949) 936-7200.
At the heart of this initiative is a simple message: we believe in our students. We believe in their ability to be present, manage challenges, and grow through intentional choices. Thank you for partnering with us to support this experience and for your continued commitment to your student’s academic and social-emotional development.
